Turning the kitchen into a lab!

Online teaching makes it somewhat difficult but not impossible to work in the lab, as the S5DE students (class of Mrs Franz) proved with this experiment.

There are some experiments which can be carried out in the kitchen. The S5DE students, extracted oxalic acid from spinach, chard or rhubarb and then used the filtrate to determine the different calcium content of water by precipitating calcium oxalate.
The students had everything they needed at home: distilled water (laundry dryer, radiator water for the car, iron), filter paper (coffee filter, kitchen towel, ...).
What a fun way to get away from the screen.
Well done, chemists!
