Initiation to stand-up

On Monday morning, the S7 students in Ms. Silvana Cigognini and Ms. Netens' drama class had the pleasure of welcoming a renowned professional in the field of stand-up comedy, Mr. Salim Hilali, who came to share his experience, techniques, and passion.

This eagerly awaited meeting lived up to expectations: it was rich, lively, and above all extremely educational.

Throughout the session, our speaker offered an in-depth look at the essential criteria for a successful stand-up routine. The students were able to discover, or rediscover, the different stages of constructing a comedy routine: creating a stage persona, managing the pace, the importance of eye contact with the audience, and narrative strategies for delivering a gag effectively. They were also introduced to specific writing methods often used by professional comedians to structure their ideas, refine their punchlines, and strengthen their comic presence.

Beyond technique, the speaker emphasized the need to cultivate a personal voice, a unique angle, and the courage to express oneself sincerely. This aspect particularly resonated with the students and led to some very inspiring discussions.

Currently preparing a new series of shows, Mr. Salim was impressed by the energy, creativity, and commitment of the young actors. He enthusiastically expressed his desire to include some of our students in his upcoming stage projects. This is a rare and exciting opportunity that could provide a great gateway into the professional world of stand-up comedy.

We warmly thank him for his generosity, kindness, and the quality of his workshop, which allowed the students to broaden their skills, strengthen their confidence, and open themselves up to a demanding but exciting form of artistic expression.

This encounter will undoubtedly remain a highlight of the year for our apprentice actors, and we hope to be able to repeat this type of workshop very soon. For those who wish to see Mr. Salim's upcoming shows, the artist organizes comedy nights every Wednesday evening at Bar Pompette, Place Fernand Cock.
